Hiking Ulia to Pasajes

Discover a different side of San Sebastián — where wild coastline, local history, and Basque tradition come together in an unforgettable hiking experience.

We’ll begin our walk just outside the city, gradually leaving behind the urban rhythm as we climb Mount Ulia. From the very first viewpoint, the reward is instant: sweeping views over Zurriola Beach, the old town, and the deep blue Cantabrian Sea.

This isn’t just a scenic route—it’s a journey along one of the oldest coastal paths, once used by pilgrims and whalers alike. As we follow the cliffside trails through protected forest and limestone coves, We will share stories of the past and the traditions that still shape Basque life today.

Along the way, we’ll pass the iconic La Plata Lighthouse and eventually arrive at the picturesque fishing village of Pasajes San Juan, where time seems to stand still. Before crossing the estuary, we’ll pass by Albaola: The Sea Factory of the Basques—a fascinating shipbuilding museum where craftsmen are recreating a 16th-century whaling ship using traditional methods.

To complete the experience, we’ll sit by the estuary and enjoy a pintxo and local drink, taking in the peaceful rhythm of village life.  Afterward, we’ll return to San Sebastián together by public transportation—relaxed, recharged, and full of new memories.

This 12 km hike is moderately challenging, with just a couple of short climbs and plenty of time to pause and soak in the views. If you’re looking for something real—nature, culture, and connection—this walk is waiting for you.
